Chalie Boy - I Look Good

Calvert/Hearne, Texas: September 24, 2009

When much of your buzz can be attributed to one song, it may seem like you’re an overnight success story. But for Chalie Boy, his odyssey to become the next Lone Star State rap superstar began way before his bouncy, self-esteem boosting anthem, “I Look Good,” took over Texas’ airwaves this year. His desire to ascend to the top is nine long years in the making. Raised in Calvert, Texas, Chalie’s musical tastes were shaped by various influences. His mother, a schoolteacher who played piano at church, got him involved with the Church Choir when he was three. In addition to showing him how to sing in tune, she taught him about song structure and tempo. His father exposed him to blues artists like Bobby Bland, B.B. King, and Johnny Taylor, while he devoured the sounds of Run-DMC, Sugar Hill Gang, and Grandmaster Flash with his friends. However, Chalie’s desire to rhyme didn’t materialize right away as he focused on his grades and playing football, golf, and tennis. He began dabbling with bars when he was a junior in high school after a Texas legend gave him creative inspiration. “Around the time I was really tough on my UGK,” he recalls. “I’m a big fan of Bun B and his whole style and how he brought words out. He’s a real smart Southern rapper. I was thinking in my head, if I was to rap, I want to have a style and that gangsta lyricism as Bun B did.” Upon graduating, despite being a good student/athlete, college wouldn’t end up being the next step. “My plans were to go to college,” he says. “It just didn’t work out like that. Rapping wasn’t even on my mind. I just decided to start working and making money.” He began to process and prepare meat on a chicken farm. In 2000 a mutual friend introduced Chalie to Texas mixtape impresario and head of Dirty 3rd Records, DJ Boss. Although Chalie hadn’t been pursuing rap, Boss was impressed nonetheless after hearing him spit, and added him to the label and made him a part of the flourishing group, Freestyle Kingz. Over the next four years, the group dropped numerous mixtapes and the acclaimed street album, Off Tha Chain, becoming ones to watch in the Texas underground scene. However, as their profile grew, internal friction arose. “If there was a choice I would’ve stayed in the group,” Chalie pensively says. “But there was no choice. Guys felt they weren’t getting their due. They felt a situation could be better for them. So they chose to go their own path. I ended up being one of the lone artists on the label.” Instead of sulking, Chalie Boy started the process of establishing himself as a solo artist pushing 20,000 copies of his well-received first release, Making My Way, in 2004. He also began to network and on songs for mixtapes with established artists like Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Mike Jones, Chamillionaire, Z-Ro, Tum Tum, and Trae. “Knowing the caliber of artists they are and them having got signed, I was confident I’d be able to do good,” Chalie says. “It put me on the level of the person that I was working with knowing I had the ability to hold my own.” In 2007 Chalie Boy began expanding his appeal beyond the Lone Star state when he dropped his classic underground release, Versatyle Child, spawning the single, “Bumpa Grill.” The “Candy Car” ode was a college radio station favorite popping up on playlists everywhere from Louisiana to Arkansas. Chalie Boy’s slow simmering build finally started reaching a boiling point when he recorded “I Look Good” in March. “It’s a “feel good” record with a universal theme,” he says. “From the skinniest person to the widest person, if you got that great vibe, you look good.” Quickly becoming a monster hit in Texas, the song drew interest from many labels. Inking a deal with Battery/Jive Records this past August, Chalie Boy is already working hard on his untitled debut, which will include a blend of celebratory street anthems and R&B songs showcasing his vocal chops. “My diehard fans are going to get everything they’ve been getting from me as Chalie Boy,” he says. “I’m not from a major city, but I have a voice, sound, and style that grabs your attention. I want people to know that I make good music, bottom line!”

I needed this last night damn!

But now I got it, thanks!

p.s: is the the mastering of the track a bit off though or is it just me? Seem like the down beat seems to distort a bit...

Tight track though
