I started out DJing my own house parties with my homeboys. Then it was my family functions and then jumped to DJing for a chick i was sexing at the time parties. All of those i did for free because it was family {or personal} and i felt by doing that i would generate some buzz amongst the people their that wasn't fam. I started getting some gigs that way but the thing was....I had nooooo Idea that i was undercutting niccaz. I was doing it at $125 {$150 if i had to travel within 50mi} because i honestly didn't know the correct price to charge. I would ask other local DJ's and they would be real murky with a nicca about it, so i was lost. I just didnt know if I was worth more than that at that time either. It actually wasn't until recently that i realized i was undercharging and it was when i went to a retirement party {my girl is in the military} and the guy DJing got paid for doing nothing. He told me they paid him $400 and all he did was play a smooth jazz cd in the background for 2hrs and then some party tracks for about 1.5hrs. He couldn't even transition any songs...admitted this to me and how he couldn't blend at all...it was times he'd let dead air happen between songs...and i was thinking....WTF...I much be undercharging my worth...i'm far from the best, but I know look back at it and it pisses me off that niccaz came up off me...paying next to nothing for me and paying garbage niccaz twice as much b/c i didn't know any better and they did.
