  1. Tallahassee-based MC and vocalist T-Pain (born Faheem Najm) came up in a rap group called Nappy Headz but went pro as a solo R&B artist after he recorded "I'm F**ked Up," a personal take on Akon's Top Ten hit "Locked Up." Akon heard the track and took T-Pain under his wing with a contract on his Jive-distributed Konvict Muzik label. Produced and written mostly by T-Pain, Rappa Ternt Sanga was released in December 2005, led by the Top 20 single "I'm Sprung." Epiphany followed in June 2007. His 2008 album, Thr33 Ringz, was conceptually based around the circus and played up the singer's "Ringleader Man" persona. Follow @TPAIN on twitter! 2. A mix of polished pop/rock and neo-soul sex appeal made Maroon 5 one of the most popular bands of the 2000s, with songs like "This Love," "She Will Be Loved," and "Makes Me Wonder" all topping the charts worldwide. Previously, bandmates Adam Levine (vocals/guitar), Jesse Carmichael (keyboards), Mickey Madden (bass), and Ryan Dusick (drums) had spent the latter half of the '90s playing in Kara's Flowers, even releasing a debut album for Reprise Records while still attending high school. The record tanked, however, and Kara's Flowers found themselves dropped from Reprise's roster. After briefly attending college, the bandmates regrouped as Maroon 5, added former Square guitarist James Valentine to the lineup and embracing a more R&B-influenced sound. Several years later, the quintet had officially risen to the forefront of pop music with Songs About Jane and It Won't Be Soon Before Long, both of which went multi-platinum. Songs About Jane propelled the band into the mainstream, but the album was not an immediate hit. Octone Records had signed the newly christened Maroon 5 in 2001, and the debut album Jane received a lukewarm response upon its in June 2002. "Harder to Breathe" became a radio staple 17 months later and was soon followed by the omnipresent "This Love," whose steamy video (featuring frontman Levine and a barely clothed girlfriend) wooed the TV-watching crowds at MTV. Songs About Jane finally entered the Billboard Top Ten in August 2004, more than two years after the album's release, and follow-up singles like "She Will Be Loved" and "Sunday Morning" helped the album move over 2.7 million copies by year's end. Maroon 5 toured exhaustively in support of Jane's slow-burning success, issuing two stopgap recordings — 2004's 1.22.03.Acoustic and 2005's Live Friday the 13th — while traveling the world alongside groups like the Rolling Stones and John Mayer. Their schedule was especially trying on percussionist Dusick, who sustained wrist and shoulder injuries and was often unable to play. By fall 2006, Dusick had been officially replaced by Matt Flynn (the former drummer for Gavin DeGraw), and the revised band released its sophomore effort in May 2007. It Won't Be Soon Before Long proved to be less popular than its predecessor (which had sold more than four million copies in the U.S. alone), but it still enjoyed double-platinum certification while spinning off the chart-topping single "Makes Me Wonder." Maroon 5 had cemented their status as pop/rock heavyweights, and they now had the connections to prove it. Released in late 2008, Call and Response: The Remix Album reinterpreted the band's catalog with remixes by influential producers like Mary J. Blige, Mark Ronson, and Pharrell Williams. Meanwhile, the band worked with a different producer — veteran rock/country architect Robert John "Mutt" Lange — on a third studio album, Hands All Over, which was released in September 2010. 4. Actress/singer Jennifer Lopez was born in the Bronx, NY, on July 24, 1969; after starting out in musical theater as a child, at age 16 she made her film debut in the little-seen My Little Girl, but her career then stalled until she was tapped to become one of the dancing "Fly Girls" on the television sketch comedy series In Living Color. A recurring role on the TV drama Second Chances followed before Lopez was thrust into the limelight co-starring with Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in the 1995 feature film Money Train; smaller roles in pictures including My Family/Mi Familia, Jack, and Blood and Wine followed before she landed the title role in 1997's Selena, portraying the slain tejano singer. Co-starring opposite George Clooney in 1998's acclaimed Out of Sight, Lopez (part of a Puerto Rican family) became the highest-paid Latina actress in Hollywood history; the following summer, she returned to her musical roots with her debut pop album, On the 6, scoring a major hit with the infectious single "If You Had My Love." Lopez didn't waste time perfecting a sophomore effort, the appropriately titled J.Lo, which was issued in early 2001. The following year Lopez released J to tha L-O!: The Remixes and This Is Me...Then, which spawned another hit single, "Jenny from the Block." Although her high-profile romance with Ben Affleck created more headlines than her recording career, her follow-up, 2005's Rebirth

  7. Best known for her role as Effie White in the 2006 film version of the Broadway musical Dreamgirls, vocalist/actress Jennifer Hudson was first brought to the public's attention while a contestant on the third season of the reality show vocal competition American Idol. Born in 1981 in Chicago, IL, Hudson sang from a young age, first performing in her church. Various talent shows and school musical productions followed until she eventually secured a role in a local Chicago production of the musical Big River. Prior to auditioning for American Idol, Hudson also sang professionally while working on the Disney Wonder cruise ship. In 2004, she auditioned for and won a spot on the third season of American Idol along with eventual winner Fantasia Barrino. Though a strong contender and fan favorite from the start, Hudson would eventually become the sixth of the 12 finalists to get voted off the show. Ironically, after the show ended, there was speculation that Barrino would get the coveted role of Effie in the film version of Dreamgirls. However, Hudson won the role and went on to receive not only critical acclaim for her performance, but also both a Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Supporting Role and an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. Her debut album, Jennifer Hudson, finally materialized on Arista in September 2008, led by the Top Ten R&B/Hip-Hop single "Spotlight." 8. Shortly after the end of her gold-selling R&B act Floetry, singer, songwriter, and producer Marsha Ambrosius — whose biggest claim to fame as a writer is Michael Jackson's Top 20 hit “Butterflies” — signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label. Nothing came from the short-lived alliance. However, Ambrosius eventually signed with J Records, where she finally released her first official solo album — Late Nights & Early Mornings — in 2011. While in creative limbo, she was nonetheless active, issuing a handful of mixtapes and collaborating with Alicia Keys (“Go Ahead”), Mario (“Why"), Jazmine Sullivan (“Music [All I Need]”), Jamie Foxx (“Freak’in Me”), and Wale (“Diary”). 9. It’s not easy to size up Sean Garrett. At first glance outside of his recording studio, the Atlanta, GA native’s body builder frame and casual dress code speak more of someone coming from the gym than from negotiating a multi-million dollar deal. You wouldn't know from his southern hospitality that he grew up in Europe and speaks several languages. The down to earth demeanor is the opposite of the Hollywood image you’d expect from a man whose talent has changed the face of popular music. However, inside the booth, mild-mannered Clark Kent gives way to the man of steel that is Sean “The Pen” Garrett. Somewhere between the buzzing cell phone and pounding production pouring from the speakers, it hits home that you’re looking at the man your favorite artists turn to for a hit and with good reason. “I have 17 #1 records that have changed my generation’s sound right before your eyes,” he says, turning down the music to get his point across. Being nicknamed "The Pen" by Jay-Z himself solidifies the power of Garrett's pen and pad. "For Hov to bless me with something like that just says everything. People know that Jay knows when somebody's got it," Garrett modestly states.Sean Garrett was born in Atlanta, Georgia to a mother and father who loved music. At age 4, Sean competed in his first talent show against kids twice his age at Therrell High School, “‘Just A Little Bit of You Everyday’ by the Jackson’s was the song I chose to perform,” Sean remembers. Sean was talented enough to hold his own with the older kids. The following year Sean’s family moved to Germany to be with his father during his military run. “The Armed Forces Network played TOP 40 hits which broadened my horizons to all different types of music. Being from Atlanta gave me a complete blend of two extremes, and a vast range of different types of music.” Snap, New Edition, Boys II Men, Mariah Carey and even the Beatles were heavy influencers of his childhood. Having music lovers as parents also encouraged his talent. “My mother always allowed me to be as creative as I wanted, which let me start producing at 10 years old”. By 15, Sean had signed his first deal as an artist in Europe. Eventually he returned stateside and signed with Warner, but the deal fell through due to label restructuring. Hurt and disillusioned, he stepped back from pursuing his career for a while and focused on family.Sean moved to South Carolina and tried his hand as a mortgage broker. His dreams, however, were still there. “I had a son and had to take care of him, (but) whenever I wasn’t working I was in the studio.” The loss of his mother in 2002 brought him back to his hometown of Atlanta and the burgeoning music community there. Before long, Sean signed a publishing deal with LA Reid’s Hitco in August of 2003. His first chart topper, “Yeah” with superstar Usher, tore through the airwaves in January 2004, hit #1 in 42 different countries, and helped push the Confessions album to Diamond. Demand for “The Pen’s” Platinum results skyrocketed, spawning hits like “Goodies” for Ciara; “Run It” and “Wall To Wall” for Chris Brown; “Soldier” and “Lose My Breath” for Destiny’s Child; and even “London Bridges” for B.E.P.’s own pop Dutchess, Fergie; to name a few. "These are the legends of our generation,” he says matter-of-factly. As if the endorsement of the biggest rapper in the world isn’t convincing enough, Sean can also claim a co-sign from Jay-Z’s better half with their collaborations on “Check Up On It,” “Diva,” “Video Phone,” “Ring The Alarm,” “Upgrade You,” and “Get Me Bodied”. “Beyonc
  10. Pop singer and dancer Nicole Scherzinger was born Nicole Elikolani Prescovia Scherzinger on June 29, 1978, in Honolulu, HI, but was raised mostly in Louisville, KY, moving there at age six with her mom after her parents separated. Scherzinger (who is of Hawaiian, Russian, and Filipino descent) went to a performing arts high school and, following graduation, enrolled at Wright State University in Dayton, OH. Majoring in theater arts and minoring in dance, she eventually put college on hold to pursue music, initially serving as a backing vocalist for the late-'90s rock group Days of the New. In 2001, Scherzinger entered as a contestant on the first season of the WB television show Popstars, where she won the role of lead singer in the resulting all-girl pop group Eden's Crush. The group's first single, "Get Over Yourself," did well on radio and broke into the Billboard Hot 100s Top Ten, but when their label folded soon after, Eden's Crush shortly followed suit. Scherzinger pushed forward and contributed a track ("Breakfast in Bed") to the soundtrack for the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore flick 50 First Dates under the name Nicole Kea. Around the same time, the popular L.A. burlesque act the Pussycat Dolls were being recast into more of a commercial pop/R&B group, and Scherzinger joined on as their lead singer in 2003. In fact, Scherzinger wound up singing basically all of the vocals on the group's 2005 debut, PCD, along with being the only Doll to have a few songwriting credits on the album. As the Pussycat Dolls' record went on to sell millions of copies, Scherzinger collaborated on various songs outside of the group with artists like P. Diddy, Rihanna, Avant, Will Smith, and Belinda. As the Pussycat Dolls continued to support their debut on the road, Scherzinger readied the release of her first solo album, Her Name Is Nicole..., scheduled for release in late summer 2007. The album is slated to feature various guest spots, including ones from Akon, Timbaland, and will.i.am. Scherzinger also plans on returning to her first love of acting at some point; her r
  11. Possessing a keenness that belied his age, Pittsburgh, PA, rap lyricist Wiz Khalifa came to be a rising star over the course of the late 2000s based on his young bravado and hardcore yet charismatic execution of rhymes. Consciously building up his city's hip-hop reputation, he sought out to create a sound that was uniquely Pittsburgh, relying on his East Coast (Jay-Z, Wu-Tang Clan), Southern (Three 6 Mafia), and other (Bone Thugs-N-Harmony) hip-hop influences. A military brat, Khalifa, whose real name is Cameron Thomaz, was born in 1987 in Minot, ND. After his parents divorced when he was about age three, he lived in various places and military bases around the world before settling in Pittsburgh. He was constantly writing during that time and soaked up a great deal of knowledge from his globetrotting experiences. His first attempt at committing lyrics to paper happened around age nine, and at 12 he was already recording and producing his own records in his father's Oklahoma studio. As soon as he returned to Pittsburgh, Khalifa laid down the groundwork to begin a solo career and kept busy recording music in a local studio, called I.D. Labs, in the Lawrenceville neighborhood of the city. Khalifa stood out among the studio's regulars, prompting the I.D. Labs staff to offer him free beats and recording time, plus bringing him to the attention of Benjy Grinberg, a former executive assistant to L.A. Reid at Arista Records who had started up a new independent label, Rostrum Records. Signed to Rostrum, Khalifa built a buzz in Pittsburgh with a few singles, but he began to draw eyes and ears nationally during his senior year in high school with his first mixtape, Prince of the City: Welcome to Pistolvania, in early 2006. And with the release of his independent full-length debut, Show and Prove, later that year, major publications, including Vibe, XXL, and Rolling Stone, featured profiles on the young rapper, projecting him to be the leading voice of Pittsburgh hip-hop. A regular staple on Pittsburgh radio, Khalifa was definitely living up to that prediction, going on to sell tens of thousands of mixtapes, not to mention tens of thousands of Show and Prove copies around the country. It was only a matter of time before the major labels came looking for the stand-out Pittsburgh rapper. In summer 2007, Khalifa and Rostrum hopped on board with Warner and cut his first major-label single, "Young'n on His Grind." Follow @REALWIZKHALIFA on twitter! When a person hears 19-year-old Omari sing for the first time, automatic thoughts come to mind: “This is an artist who has something special;” “He’s the newest sensation to the music world;” and “This is a young artist with melodic and soulful vocal ability, vision and conviction that can change the music game forever.” Possessing just the right ingredients of a ready-made R&B superstar, Omari’s musical debut will leave his listeners wanting more. His unique musical style offers clever, quirky lyrics and a vocal ability sure to captivate any audience. A native of Atlanta, Ga., Omari was raised in the community of Lithonia. Growing up, he was heavily influenced by reggae due to his Jamaican family heritage, as well as the hip-hop influenced culture in Atlanta. R&B, hip-hop and reggae musical greats were influential in Omari’s overall musical style and helped to cultivate and expand his songwriting and identity as an emerging artist. Shortly after graduating high school, Omari left Atlanta to attend college on a full basketball scholarship at Savannah State University. Following college, Omari realized that creating and performing music were the passions he wanted to pursue. Moving back to Atlanta, Omari joined an up-and-coming R&B all boy music group called Hamilton Park. The group was quickly signed with Playmakers/Warner Bros. However, while performing and working as a member of Hamilton Park, Omari decided to rediscover his passions for songwriting and performing as a solo artist. Omari’s musical journey and various collaborations with well-known music producers in Atlanta garnered attention from record label founders and executives Triston “TJ” Thomas and Andelko “Ace” Tadic with In Love With Music, LLC. The independent music label quickly signed Omari as a solo recording artist. Omari’s current R&B teasers, “Pink and Gold,” “Phone” and “Bad Boi” are generating a lot of attention in the Atlanta music scene. Right now, Omari is working on new music for his upcoming album. When describing his music, Omari says, “It’s feel good music. My music is for everyone.” The singer and songwriter is excited about his future as he makes a name for himself and brings innovation and good music back to the industry. Follow @O_Lyfe on twitter!
