  3. One of the most recognizable characters in modern-day R&B, Beyoncé first rose to fame as the siren-voiced centerpiece of Destiny's Child before embarking on a multi-platinum solo career in 2001. Booming record sales, Grammy awards, movie roles, and a romance with rapper/CEO Jay-Z combined to heighten her profile in the 2000s, making the singer a virtual mainstay in the entertainment world. While some media outlets derisively championed Paris Hilton as "the next Marilyn Monroe," Beyoncé was a much better contender for the role, her glittering pop culture persona only matched by her success onscreen and on record.Born in Houston in September 1981, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles began performing at age seven, winning upwards of 30 local competitions for her dancing and vocal abilities. She also joined her cousin Kelly Rowland and classmates LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett in forming an adolescent vocal group. Mathew Knowles, Beyoncé's father and Rowland's legal guardian, signed on to be the girls' manager, eventually quitting his full-time job to focus on their efforts. This situation would ultimately lead to the creation of one of the most popular female R&B groups of all time — Destiny's Child.Destiny's Child gained momentum throughout the 1990s, appearing on Star Search in 1992 (under the name Girl's Tyme) and weathering several lineup changes before signing to Columbia Records in 1997. Four studio albums later, the group had officially become the best-selling female group of all time, with such smash hits as "Jumpin' Jumpin'," "Bills, Bills, Bills," "Say My Name," and "Survivor" bolstering the girls' momentum despite a continued string of lawsuits from former members Roberson and Luckett (who contested Mathew Knowles' management, claiming he withheld profits and unjustly favored his daughter and niece). In 2001, Beyoncé, Rowland, and replacement member Michelle Williams allowed themselves a break from the group to pursue individual solo careers. Before landing several movie roles, Beyoncé became the first African-American female artist and second woman ever to win the annual ASCAP Pop Songwriter of the Year Award. An appearance in the MTV drama Carmen: A Hip Hopera quickly followed, but it was her role as Foxxy Cleopatra in 2002's Austin Powers in Goldmember that established Beyoncé as a true Hollywood star. While her inclusion on the movie's soundtrack failed to chart nationally, Beyoncé's full-length solo debut, 2003's Dangerously in Love, reached multi-platinum status. Featuring collaborations with Sean Paul, Missy Elliott, OutKast's Big Boi, and romantic interest Jay-Z, the album spawned a total of four Top Ten singles and garnered the singer five Grammys. Destiny's Child reconvened the following year to release Destiny Fulfilled; upon completing the resulting tour, the group issued one final album, a greatest-hits compilation entitled #1's, and subsequently disbanded. Beyoncé turned her full attention to her burgeoning solo career, releasing the sophomore effort B'day in September 2006 and, three months later, turning in an award-winning performance for the movie musical Dreamgirls. The singer then embarked on the Beyoncé Experience concert tour, releasing a live DVD in November 2007.The following year proved to be another busy one as Beyoncé landed the role of Etta James in Cadillac Records, a musical biopic that explored the heyday of Chicago's Chess Records. Shooting commenced in February 2008, with Beyoncé also serving as co-executive producer. One month before the film's December release, the singer released her third studio album, I Am...Sasha Fierce. The double-disc effort emphasized her two distinct personalities, allowing Beyoncé to explore both mainstream sounds and traditional R&B. Some live releases followed. Released in 2009, I Am...Yours, a CD/DVD set, documented an August 2009 performance at Wynn Las Vegas, while 2010's I Am...World Tour, available in separate audio and video formats, was recorded at London's significantly larger O2 Arena (a few months after the Vegas program). 4. Influenced by the unpredictable rhymes of Missy Elliot along with the sexually charged attitudes of Lil' Kim and Foxy Brown, Queens native Nicki Minaj was discovered thanks to her MySpace page. It was there that Dirty Money Entertainment CEO Fendi first heard her ability to freestyle and first laid eyes on her steamy set of promo shots. With killer curves she was obviously proud to flaunt plus a background in the performing arts thanks to the Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music and Art the school that had inspired the movie Fame Minaj was a perfect fit for Fendi's urban DVD magazine, The Come Up. She appeared in numerous volumes, including number 11, which spotlighted her future label boss, superstar rapper Lil Wayne. Through Fendi, Wayne contacted Minaj and signed her to his Young Money label. They began to build her career through mixtapes like Lil Wayne's Dedication 3 and Minaj's own Sucka Free. Meanwhile, appearances on various remixes everything from T.I.'s "No Matter What" to Jeffree Star's club track "Cupcakes Taste Like Violence" helped spread the word. The big breakthrough came when Wayne added his rhymes to her "High as a Kite" single, a mixtape favorite in 2008. The year 2009 would see more guest appearances and mixtapes including the Beam Me up Scotty mixtape which featured the street single "I Get Crazy. In 2010, the singles Your Love and Check It Out preceded the release of her official debut album, Pink Friday. 6. No matter what is being supplied, a hustler is only as good as his word. With Atlanta serving up some of the hottest product in the rap game, native son Young Jeezy stands as one of the most exciting merchants of cool to emerge in years. Thanks to underground testimonials like “Air Forces” and “Chuuch,” Jeezy’s street swagger and authentic style has quickly made believers out of some the biggest players in the game, from Fabolous to P. Diddy. In his native Atlanta, and throughout the south, Young Jeezy has created nothing short of a movement. Like many hustlers on the mic, rapping wasn’t in Jeezy’s original game plan. As CEO of Corporate Thug Entertainment, Jeezy was content to stack his paper from the background. “Basically, I’m a real nigga so I can relate more to a lot of cats,” Jeezy says of his appeal. “ I don’t just do music for the clubs, I do music for the struggle. I do music for everyday niggas, the kids who ain’t got no sense of direction. I’m trying to restore some of the morals back into the game, as far as the street.” What sets Young Jeezy’s music apart is his ability to bring color and flash to a story that has been told so many times before. He’s a true digital age artist who doesn’t need 16 bars to develop a picture in your head. When he snaps off a verse the image is simple enough for everyone to feel it instantly. 9. Diggy's 15th birthday in March 2010, will always be one he'll remember, as it was the day he inked a deal with Atlantic Records, with a management deal with Chris Lightly and Violator Management, following shortly after. Continuing to establish himself as an artist one track at a time prior to signing a major label deal, it wasn't until Diggy took to the studio to create "Just The Beginning" a sharp, ambitious take on Drake's "Over," only hours after Drake released the single, that he caught the attention of hip-hop fans everywhere. Riding on the momentum of "Just The Beginning," Diggy teamed up with video director Phil The God to create a viral video that many say led to his record deal. "Flow Stoopid," a freestyle track over Nas' "Made You Look," received instant co-signs from rap heavy hitters ranging from Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West to Common, Quest Love, and Talib Kweli while becoming an instant viral sensation. It also became the first time people noticed Diggy, the rapper.Performing on Hot 97's famed Summer Jam stage, Diggy was introduced to a wider audience, who left the annual concert seeing firsthand what all the hype was surrounding the young rapper was all about. Soon after, Diggy linked up with friend and Sony Music artist, Bei Major, for "Great Expecations," the first single off his second mixtape, "Airbone." The single, which features Diggy rapping over a snare-driven beat, caught the attention of executives at AT&T, who wanted to feature both the track as well as Simmons in their "Big Shoes" commercial campaign. With a viral video and major commercial under his belt, Diggy teamed up with his mentors Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell Williams for the skateboarder anthem, "Oh Yeah." "Airborne" was released in September 2010 and featured collaborations with Raekwon, Chris Brown, Colin Munroe, Wynter Gordon and production from Boi-1da and Black the Beast, and hosted by DJ Spin King.Diggy continued becoming a role model for today's younger generation after being personally invited to be a guest speaker at Pharrell's KIDULT program. He followed his much-talked about BET Hip Hop Awards Cipher, alongside his father and brother, JoJo Simmons, with the release of his third mixtape in 2 years, "Past, Present (s) Future."Diggy received the ultimate co-sign in April 2011, when XXL Magazine featured him in their "Freshman Class" issue, an issue dedicated solely to the stand out artists who the publication believes have made a strong impact, and have the potential to take this buzz into a concrete placement in the hip-hop world. The day after his 16th birthday, which also happened to mark a year since he signed his record deal, Simmons took the stage at the XXL Freshman Class Concert, where he surprised the crowd by bringing out Rev. Run, marking the first time two generations of hip-hop performed on stage together. While there is no denying that his last name plays a small role in the recent success of his career, Diggy has put in the time and hard work to get to the point in his career that he is at right now. His loyal fans, who he calls "jetsetters" know and appreciate the hard work and dedication he has to each project and he devotes all the success to them. Diggy is well on his way to a successful rap and fashion career, as well as establishing himself in the lineage created by his father and uncle. 10. Stars are born not made. With a soul made up of dedication, ambition and drive. 14 year-old, Jacob Latimore, a true triple threat; and is proving whatever he sets his mind to do he will succeed.Growing up around music, singing is in his genes. The young singer's father and uncles make up the inspirational quartet, The Latimore Brothers. At age five, the talented Milwaukee native discovered the movie, The Temptations; watching it every day, perfecting and emulating the songs he heard and the dance moves he saw. After watching in amazement the first performance of boy band group B2K, he taught himself their choreography by studying the videotape his mom brought him. Jacob had developed a serious discipline for the craft of dance. In 2005, at 9-years old, Jacob had made up in his mind that he wanted to pursue a career in music. With the support and help from his parents, he teamed up with local Milwaukee producers, who produced his first song, "Best Friend". Several local DJ's and radio stations caught wind of the song, and founder of the Core DJ's, Tony Neal stamped him as, "the next kid star!" Jacobs buzz continued to build around the city as his mom booked him shows at local events and festivals, and schools. However, his career really took flight when Radio Disney picked up his song “Best Friend”. Jacob was then featured on the station's Incubator program, which profiles promising young artists around the country. Through Incubator, Jacob booked shows with other Radio Disney favorites such as B5, to booking his first ever-national television performance on the Maury Povich Show, after producers saw a video of him on his MySpace page.Jacobs parents and management agreed that in order to take Jacob’s career to the next level, it would be ideal to move him to Atlanta, in 2007. Jacob’s team immediately set up a showcase to introduce him to Atlanta music and media executives and tastemakers. Word spread that Jacob was the kid to see, the showcase attracted Grammy producer Rodney Jerkins to R&B singer Lloyd. Jacob continued to make even more noise as his single, "Superstar", written by Rico Love (Beyonce, Diddy, Usher) charted on the Billboard R&B and Hip Hop Sales Charts with little to no promotion. The natural born performer has been pounding the pavement leaving crowds in awe, even impressing his idols, Usher and Mario. "Before I get on stage, my adrenaline is always pumping hard. The screams from the crowd get me excited!" After being courted by numerous record label executives, Jacob signed with Jive Records in March 2010 and brought in powerhouse managers Larry Rudolph and Jeremy Geffen. Now 2011, Jacob first single “Like Em All ft. reality star and rapper, Diggy Simmons will make its video debut on January 25th, 2011.Jacob’s natural talent as an actor makes up his triple threat status. After being discovered by talent agent, Joy Pervis (Dakota Fanning, Lucas Till) in 2008, Jacob booked several commercials, voice-overs, episodic, and his first lead role in the feature film, "Vanishing on 7th Street”, which is slated for February 18th, 2011. After the films pre theatrical release On Demand January 7th, 2011 Jacob has gotten awesome reviews for his performance as one film critic quotes, “audiences are treated to newcomer Jacob Latimore who is nothing short of fantastic. In bringing a braveness and a vulnerability to the role of a 12 year old boy, Latimore is in many ways the true hero of the film.”Jacob feels like this is what he was born to do, "I give all credit to God, he gave me this gift, and I am so excited to see what other doors he is going to open for me!" 11. Raw, gritty and talented describe the lyrical talents of Rapper Meek Mill. His skills are so natural that he has a flow like no other. Born May 6, 1987 under the astrological sign of Taurus, Robert Rahmeek Williams adopted the rap name “Meek Mill” after family and friends from his neighborhood kept referencing him by his middle name. Meek is coined as the latest rap phenomenon to come out of the city of Philadelphia.Raised in the North Philadelphia section of the city with his sister and inspired by his mother and father; who died when he was five, Meek Mill began taking the rap game seriously at the age of 12 after losing a street battle to neighboring rappers. He says his desire to rap grew after watching his uncle Philly hip-hop pioneer Grandmaster Nell. While hanging out in his neighborhood, Meek met three guys and formed the group, “BloodHoundz,” which consisted of Mel Love, Dat Nigga Lil and Young Pooh. The group lasted for fives years and Meek ventured on his own. With a solo career in tow, Meek became one of Philadelphia’s hottest underground rap artists on an independent label. In 2007, Meek debuted his Flamerz series, which stands for hottest songs and released his first mix tape, Flamerz 1, which featured the hit single, “In My Bag.”In 2008, Meek debuted the highly anticipated Flamerz 2 –“Hottest In The City,” which showcased more of his lyrical abilities with the singles, “I'm So Fly,” “Prolli,” and “Hottest In The City.” Upon release of Flamerz 2, it caught the attention of founder and President of 215Aphillyated Records, Charlie Mack. Mack was immediately impressed with Meek that he signed him to his management company. During the same year, he met the founder and owner of Grand Hustle, TI. TI was impressed with his lyrical ability that he offered him an opportunity to travel to Los Angeles to meet with him along with the Warner Brothers Records, within one week both record companies offered him a deal. Meek was overwhelmed by the offers; however, he felt collaborating with TI was an opportunity of a lifetime and chose his label. An ecstatic Meek was on top of the world; a record deal and the chance to work with one of hip hop’s greatest rappers and then a set back occurred. He was arrested, charged with a crime and order to serve seven months in jail.Meek pre-released three singles from his third mix tape Flamerz 2.5 – “The Preview” in August of 2009, which featured the chart topping hits, “Make ‘Em Say,” “Imma Da Ish,” featuring Ms. Jade and “Starting Something,” in honor Michael Jackson. Within the first two weeks of its release, Clear Channel added it to their play list, which is an anomaly in the music business. In June of 2009, Meek began immediately working on his freshman album – Flamerz 3, “Hottest In America – Gangster Grill Edition,” hosted by DJ Drama and featuring the songs: “Baby Girl,” “Hottest In America,” and “I’m Killin em.” The highly anticipated cd is set to be released on January 19, 2010. Despite his stint in jail, Meek’s fans remained loyal, he currently boasts of 13 million hits on MySpace and 20 million viewers on You Tube.In the future, Meek plans to establish the Meek Mill Foundation, which will mentor young males between the ages of 12-24 on the importance of “Education over Incarceration.” He also plans to collaborate with United Community Action Network and the Lifers of Graterford Prison to address the violence plaguing our cities. 14. When her debut album, What's the 411?, hit the street in 1992, critics and fans alike were floored by its powerful combination of modern R&B with an edgy rap sound that glanced off of the pain and grit of Mary J. Blige's Yonkers, NY, childhood. Called alternately the new Chaka Khan or new Aretha Franklin, Blige had little in common stylistically with either of those artists, but like them, she helped adorn soul music with new textures and flavors that inspired a whole generation of musicians. With her blonde hair, self-preserving slouch, and combat boots, Blige was street-tough and beautiful all at once, and the record company execs who profited off of her early releases did little to dispel the bad-girl image that she earned as she stumbled through the dizzying first days of her career. As she exorcised her personal demons and softened her style to include sleek designer clothes, she remained a hero to thousands of girls growing up in the same kinds of rough places she came from. Blige reinvented her career again and again by shedding the bad habits and bad influences that kept her down; by the time her fourth album, Mary, was released in 1999, she had matured into an expressive singer able to put the full power of her voice behind her music, while still reflecting a strong urban style. With her fifth album, No More Drama, it wasn't just Blige's style that shone through the structures set up for her by songwriters and producers, it was her own vision — spiritual, emotional, personal, and full of wisdom, it reflected an artist who was comfortable with who she was and how far she had come.Born in the Bronx on January 11, 1971, Blige spent the first few years of her life in Savannah, GA, before moving with her mother and older sister to the Schlobam housing projects in Yonkers, NY. Her rough life there produced more than a few scars, physical and otherwise, and Blige dropped out of high school her junior year, instead spending time doing her friends' hair in her mother's apartment and hanging out. When she was at a local mall in White Plains, NY, she recorded herself singing Anita Baker's "Caught Up in the Rapture" into a karaoke machine. The resulting tape was passed by Blige's stepfather to Uptown Records CEO Andre Harrell. Harrell was impressed with Blige's voice and signed her to sing backup for local acts like Father MC. In 1991, however, Sean "Puffy" Combs took Blige under his wing and began working with her on What's the 411?, her debut album. Combs had a heavy hand in What's the 411?, along with producers Dave Hall, Mark Morales, and Mark Rooney, and the stylish touches that they added to Blige's unique vocal style created a stunning album that bridged the gap between R&B and rap in a way that no female singer had before. Uptown tried to capitalize on the success of What's the 411? by issuing a remixed version of it a year later, but it was only a modest success creatively and commercially. Her 1995 follow-up, My Life, again featured Combs' handiwork, and if it stepped back stylistically from its urban roots by featuring less of a rap sound, it made up for it with its subject matter. My Life was full of ghetto pathos and Blige's own personal pain shone through like a beacon. Her rocky relationship with fellow Uptown artist K-Ci Hailey likely contributed to the raw emotions on the album. The period following the recording of My Life was also a difficult time professionally for Blige, as she severed her ties with Combs and Uptown, hired Suge Knight as a financial advisor, and signed with MCA.Released in 1997, Share My World marked the beginning of Blige's creative partnerships with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The album was another hit for Blige and debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. Critics soured somewhat on its more conventional soul sound, but Blige's fans seemed undaunted. By the time her next studio album, Mary, came out in 1999, the fullness and elegance of her new sound seemed more developed, as Blige exuded a classic soul style aided by material from Elton John and Bernie Taupin, Stevie Wonder, and Lauryn Hill. Mary made it obvious that the ghetto fabulous style and more confrontational aspects of her music were gone, while the emotive power still remained. That power also helped carry the more modern-sounding 2001 release No More Drama, a deeply personal album that remained a collective effort musically yet reflected more of Blige's songwriting than any of her previous efforts. The Mary J. Blige on No More Drama seemed miles away from the flashy kid on What's the 411?, yet it was still possible to see the path through her music that produced an older, wiser, but still expressive artist. In 2003 she was reunited with P. Diddy, who produced the majority of that year's patchy Love and Life album. The Breakthrough followed two years later and was a tremendous success, spawning a handful of major singles. By the December 2006 release of Reflections (A Retrospective), The Breakthrough's lead single, "Be Without You," had spent nearly a year on the R&B chart, while the album's fifth single, "Take Me as I Am," had been on the same chart for over four months. A year later Blige came out with her eighth studio album, Growing Pains. It was her third consecutive studio album to top both the Billboard 200 and the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts. While on tour with Robin Thicke during 2008, Blige began working on Stronger, which was released near the end of the following year. 15. As CEO of Corporate Thug Entertainment, Jeezy was content to stack his paper from the background.“Basically, I’m a real nigga so I can relate more to a lot of cats,” Jeezy says of his appeal. “ I don’t just do music for the clubs, I do music for the struggle. I do music for everyday niggas, the kids who ain’t got no sense of direction. I’m trying to restore some of the morals back into the game, as far as the street.”What sets Young Jeezy’s music apart is his ability to bring color and flash to a story that has been told so many times before. He’s a true digital age artist who doesn’t need 16 bars to develop a picture in your head. When he snaps off a verse the image is simple enough for everyone to feel it instantly. Shortly after the end of her gold-selling R&B act Floetry, singer, songwriter, and producer Marsha Ambrosius — whose biggest claim to fame as a writer is Michael Jackson's Top 20 hit “Butterflies” — signed with Dr. Dre's Aftermath label. Nothing came from the short-lived alliance. However, Ambrosius eventually signed with J Records, where she finally released her first official solo album — Late Nights & Early Mornings — in 2011. While in creative limbo, she was nonetheless active, issuing a handful of mixtapes and collaborating with Alicia Keys (“Go Ahead”), Mario (“Why"), Jazmine Sullivan (“Music [All I Need]”), Jamie Foxx (“Freak’in Me”), and Wale (“Diary”). 19. Melanie Fiona is a bright, young R&B artist and Kanye West protégé from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Born Melanie Hall, the singer grew up in inner-city Toronto to Guayanese parents. Fiona developed a passion for music at an early age, influenced by groups and artists such as the Ronettes and Whitney Houston. It's no surprise, then, that she offers a throwback retro sound to complement her immaculate voice. Though she has been active in the music industry since 2002, her first recorded release came with Reggae Gold 2008, in the form of the track "Somebody Come Get Me." The track was instantly acclaimed as a highlight, as well as a fan favorite on the album, and it helped her get signed to Universal Motown. Fiona released her debut single, "Give It to Me Right," which samples "Time of the Season" by the Zombies. Fiona's melismatic and dynamic vocal propelled the single to the Top 20 on the Canadian Hot 100, in addition to charting on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop songs chart. Her debut album, The Bridge, was released in the fall of 2009, and was a Top 25 album on the Canadian Album Chart. The album which was spearheaded by Andrea Martin, and its lead single also charted in the U.K. and Italy. She is also known for being the opening act on Kanye West's European tour in 2008, which is notable because she hadn't even released an album at the time of the tour. Follow @melaniefiona on twitter! 20. 21. Dare to be different has always been a way of life but unfortunately the media doesn't always accept versatility. As a person who's no stranger to being versatile or the entertainment industry, Stuey Rock was created as a means for the media and the fans to focus on the music instead of the artist. The artist currently known as Stuey Rock was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri in a middle class neighborhood with his four brothers and sisters. Growing up, he's always had an interest in music but his main hobbies were mostly sports like basketball, wrestling, and soccer in particular. It wasn't until his teenage years that he began to have an interest in entertainment and at the age of 16 he began promoting and hosting local parties. Despite his parents wishes to pursue a college education, he soon begun to throw and even invest in parties earning himself enough money to venture out on his own. Besides becoming a local celebrity, he was also chosen out of thousands of audition tapes for a job hosting a Hip Hop show on national television. The TV gig then led to an even better opportunity to take his career further but that meant relocating to Atlanta, Georgia where he currently resides.Despite all the success that he's had in his hometown and on television, Stuey Rock has always had his heart in making music. It wasn't until he started doing TV that he gained enough confidence to really pursue his love for music. As time passed and more opportunities became available such as being signed to Def Jam by Kevin Liles for a year, the idea and concept of Stuey Rock became even more important. Growing up he was always told that because he was "black" he was suppose to listen to artists such as Biggie Smalls, Tupac, and Cash Money but instead of being what everyone else wanted him to be, he just wanted to be himself. Living the life of Hip Hop while still listening to the likes of Linkin Park, Green Day, Good Charlotte, and Gym Class Heroes, his musical influences play a major factor in his diverse musical style. He allows his life to dictate his music instead of what everyone else expects him to do. With the support of friends, family, and other recording artist such as Nellly and Chingy, Stuey Rock was created as an outlet to produce great music the way he knows best, from the heart. In addition to the creation of Stuey Rock, an independent label, Proof Entertainment was also created with the intention to take his music to the next level and beyond. With hit makers Stuey Rock, Rob Fetti and producer Honarable C.N.O.T.E, on deck, you can expect more club bangers from Proof Entertainment such as Stuey Rock's popular track "Nympho Maniac" ft. Rob Fetti and his latest single "Jook It" produced by DJ Montay. Also, be on the look out for more great collabos with artists and producers such as Bobby Valentino, Shawty Redd, Muffy Cupcakeopia, Blazed, DJ Unk, Marvelous J, DJ Montay and Joe Blow Da CEO. 22. The self-proclaimed "Ambassador of Rap for the Capital," Wale (pronounced "wah-lay") was able to transcend his local sensation status and become a national rap contender using go-go-inspired hip-hop as the vehicle for his clever wordplay and music. Olubowale Victor Akintimehin was born in Washington, D.C., in 1984 to Nigerian immigrants who first arrived to America five years prior. Although the family moved to Maryland at age ten, Wale was mostly raised in suburban D.C. He attended both Robert Morris College and Virginia State University on football scholarships, eventually transferring a third time to Bowie State. The music bug had already bit him hard, though, and soon he quit college altogether to turn towards a recording career.Wale got his first airplay circa 2003-2004 with "Rhyme of the Century," thanks to the help of a local radio DJ who believed in his potential. This landed him in the "Unsigned Hype" column in Source Magazine the following year. In 2006, Wale signed with the local start-up imprint Studio 43, owned by a former VP of Roc-a-Fella Records, and enjoyed a string of hits in the D.C.-Maryland-Virginia area that year. Many of those records sampled from '80s go-go — a more raw, percussion-driven offshoot of disco originating in D.C. — like the popular "Dig Dug," a tribute to Ronald "Dig Dug" Dixon of go-go band the Northeast Groovers. Smart use of the Internet and MySpace was also a big factor in his success, as it helped British über-producer and DJ Mark Ronson (known for his work with Amy Winehouse, Christina Aguilera, and Rhymefest) catch wind of the go-go MC in 2007.Wale struck a production deal with Ronson's own imprint, Allido, and released the 100 Miles and Running mixtape that summer. Despite not being signed to a major label, he was met with a good deal of positive press, ranging from XXL magazine to The New York Times. After a bidding war that included offers from Epic, Atlantic, and Def Jam, Interscope finally grabbed Wale for its roster in early 2008. The full-length Attention Deficit followed in 2009. 23. Born in Guyana, Brooklyn rapper Red Café immigrated to New York with his family when he was young, settling in the Caribbean-populated Flatbush section of Brooklyn. Hip-hop music suddenly became an obsession for him after he first heard the Slick Rick/Doug E. Fresh classic "The Show." However, his real interest was turn toward the streets, where his life of crime eventually landed him in prison in 1992. Upon his release four years later, he formed a rap group named Da Franchise with neighborhood friends. The group signed with Violator Records and even appeared on several mixtapes and label compilations, but because the crew never really took off, they each went their separate ways. Red Café stayed with Violator and also began to rack up credits as a ghostwriter, including for Diddy's verse on the Busta Rhymes Top 20 single "Pass the Courvoisier" in 2002. After he left Violator, a series of failed major-label deals and, consequently, shelved albums followed. During his stint with Capitol, to which he was signed via Mack 10's Hoo-Bangin' imprint, Red Café even recorded a number of well-received singles, including "All Night Long" (appearing on the Coach Carter soundtrack in 2005), "Yellow Bottle," and "Bling Blaow." Despite the label ups and downs, he was able to maintain a consistent presence in New York through its mixtape circuit, collaborating with DJ Whoo Kid, DJ Envy, Craig G, and Clinton Sparks. In 2007, the Brooklyn rapper joined rising star Akon's boutique label Konvict Muzik. He first dropped the DJ Envy-hosted mixtape The Co-Op before releasing his Konvict Muzik/Universal full-length, The Shakedown. Follow @redcafe on twitter! 24. Once dubbed "the Jay-Z of the South" by Pharrell Williams, T.I. gradually came into his own and established himself as one of rap's most successful MCs during the early 2000s. Like Jay-Z, T.I. — born Clifford Harris in Atlanta, GA — carried a balance of smoothness and toughness, and although 2001's I'm Serious didn't shoot him out of the gate à la Reasonable Doubt, he consistently grew and launched a string of major hits with 2003's "24's." Throughout the six following years, T.I. maintained a consistent presence on urban radio stations in America: 2003's Trap Muzik, 2004's Urban Legend, 2006's King (released in tandem with T.I.'s debut screen appearance in ATL), 2007's T.I. vs T.I.P., and 2008's Paper Trail — all released through the MC's deal with Atlantic — were Top Ten albums, with the latter three even spending time at the very top of the chart. For better or for worse, T.I. also courted a good deal of controversy during his rise to superstar status. Far more ink was spent on his legal issues and conflicts with other rappers, including fellow Southerner Lil' Flip, than his Katrina relief efforts and other humanitarian involvements. One notable event occurred on May 3, 2006, when T.I.'s crew was caught up in a shooting after a show in Cincinnati. The crossfire left three people injured, while longtime friend and personal assistant Philant Johnson was fatally wounded. Despite such incidents, T.I. continued to flourish as the decade drew to a close, charting three chart-topping rap singles and four Top Five pop hits between 2008 and 2009. His career took a breather in 2009, however, when the rapper entered an Arkansas prison to serve a yearlong sentence related to federal gun charges. T.I. was released from prison at the end of 2009, serving the rest of his sentence at a halfway house in Atlanta. Just prior to the December 2010 release of his seventh album, No Mercy, he returned to prison, sentenced to 11 months for violating his probation.
