Why Do My Record Pool Tracks Have Inconsistent Loudness and How to Fix It

Your record pool tracks play at different volumes because every track was mastered separately, at a different loudness level, by a different engineer, in a different era. A 1998 house classic sits far quieter than a 2024 pop edit even at the same fader position. The fix is to enable auto gain (Serato) or track loudness normalization (Rekordbox) in your DJ software so every file is analyzed and leveled to a common reference, then trim by ear during your set.

That is the short answer. Now let me explain what is actually happening under the hood, because once you understand why the levels jump around, you can stop fighting your gain knob mid-set and start trusting your software to do the heavy lifting.

Why Are My Record Pool Tracks Different Volumes in the First Place?

Loudness is not a fixed property of a song. It is a decision made in mastering. When a track gets finished, the mastering engineer pushes the overall level to a target, and that target has changed massively over the last 30 years. Here is what causes the volume rollercoaster in a typical crate:

  • The loudness war. From the late 1990s through the 2010s, labels pushed masters louder and louder to stand out on radio and CD. A 2012 EDM banger can be crushed to within an inch of clipping, while a 1995 soul cut has tons of dynamic range and sits much lower.

Rekordbox: Track Loudness Normalization

In Rekordbox go to Preferences > Analysis and enable Auto Gain / Track Loudness, then re-analyze your collection. Analyze everything before the gig

Auto gain only works on analyzed files. If you dump fresh downloads onto a USB an hour before doors and skip analysis, the software has no loudness data and those tracks will jump. Analyze your entire new batch the day before every gig. No exceptions.

  3. Use your channel meters constantly. When you load the next track, glance at its meter and nudge the trim so both channels read the same before you blend.
  4. Keep your EQs at 12 o'clock as your neutral starting point so you are not compensating for level with tone.
