They didn’t officially become The Mogolz until September 2010, but like so many great musical groups, they’ve been together for as long as they can remember.

Major the General (Dupree Sterling Dawson), Von-Von (DeVon LaTony Gibson), and King Rello (Eric Lamar Simmons), the members of The Mogolz, grew up together in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Each of them started rapping early on in life. Major G was only four years old when he began rapping. Von-Von was a student of the two Will Smith CDs his mom kept in the house, using the lyrics to win freestyle battles in his neighborhood. And King Rello was just drawn to the music: “My friend circle consisted of either Hoopers or Rappers, and, well, I loved both of them,” he says.

The members of The Mogolz spent their formative years learning to count beats, differentiate between false and true rhyme, and utilize different software to record their music. By the time they entered high school, they were writing and producing their own songs. The guys spent countless hours in Major G’s basement, recording songs, just for the fun of it. “If you wanted to find any of us 99.9% of the time we were over at Major's crib,” says King Rello.

Shortly after graduating from high school, Major G, Von-Von and King Rello got their first taste of musical success. After playing a show one night, DJ Cooley took an interest in their talent and asked to work with them. The result was a band called Midcoast Da Team, and it included Major G, Von-Von, King Rello and DJ Cooley’s son, Ryc Rokc “We worked for a whole year getting lots of songs done, got a website and did many shows—even got offered a record deal,” Von-Von recalls.

But in August 2010, after a year of hard work, the guys decided to take what they’d learned from their experience with Midcoast Da Team and go in a different direction. “We learned how we want to sound on our songs, how to look on camera and how to carry ourselves,” Major G says. More importantly, they learned to work together to attain their dreams. “There’s a lot of things that can stop you from going where you wanna go,” he adds. “But we learned to remain focused, learned to trust our hearts.”

When The Mogolz are not playing shows in the Minneapolis area, they’re working on their album, due out spring of 2011. They recently put out a single, “That Number,” written by The Mogolz and produced by Major G. “That Number” captures the best of their unique sound and personality. It’s available to view on YouTube or to purchase at various online venues, such as iTunes.

The music of The Mogolz is inspired by numerous artists, from Kanye West to Lil Wayne to Nelly. It seeks to balance true hip hop music with the more popularized versions and to encompass a variety of subgenres. “We bring a different type of energy to our songs,” Major G says. “We really feel our music. We live inside our sound. The Mogolz Sound.”
