It wasn't the best Whitesnake album ever, but it was by no means the worst either. Yes, there were a few too many nods to the glossy American rock of the late eighties, but there were more than enough throwbacks to the early eighties to keep me happy. This latest album sees them slipping further down the pecking order of record labels - their association with SPV is no more - with this one appearing on Italian indie, Frontiers. They've obviously decided to give up on chart action, as it's one of those infuriating multi-format / release date thingys, which sees it coming out in the UK as a "Fan-Pack," which seems to involve a magazine, along with the CD and a badge, with the CD getting two bonus live tracks from 1990. The album will then come out properly three weeks later. I say bonus tracks, but they're actually from the forthcoming Live @ Donington 1990 DVD and double CD to be released in summer 2011. So I'll be giving that a miss, and just stick to this vanilla edition. We're now up to version sixteen of Whitesnake, as the time since Good To Be Bad has seen bassist Uriah Duffy, drummer Chris Frazier and, most recently, keyboards man Timothy Drury all heading off to pastures new. So this heralds the recording debut of a new rhythm section in the shape of bassist alongside Whitesnake's new drummer Brian Tichy, ex Foreigner, Pride & Glory, Billy Idol and more. Review by Thom Jurek ''allmusic'' 4/5 Stars After the all-out celebration of Keep on Giving: Acoustic Live!, Los Lonely Boys are back with their fourth studio offering and their first offering of new studio material in three years. Rockpango (a made-up Spanish word the band translates as "rock party") was produced by Henry, Ringo, and Jojo Garza, and is the first to appear on their LonelyTone imprint through Playing in Traffic. All of the material here was written by the Garzas, who add the Tosca String Quartet and keyboards where necessary to grow out their sound. The songwriting and production here are ambitious; they expand upon their rootsy brand of Texican rock & roll that defines Los Lonely Boys. Love and family are major themes on this album. -- The lyrics are above and beyond anything they've done previously, and the band is simultaneously branching out into new musical territory. The hard guitar-screaming opener "American Idle" and the acoustically based "Fly Away" showcase the sides of the band most listeners are familiar with. Both also reveal some of the trio's growth, however, with the addition of a layer of hand percussion and a ----- bassline that traces R&B and norteño. "Love in My Veins" nods to Santana, but with its staccato pulse, grooving B-3, and clavinet, it's far funkier. The track "16 Monkeys," which is one of the more comical jams on the record, is a burner with its nasty clavinet fills against Henry's chunky blues guitar vamp. The title track borrows heavily from Jimi Hendrix's "Manic Depression" with its guitar and drum phrasing, but with a swelling B-3, it becomes its own animal. While "Smile" is simply a beautiful folk-rock love song, it's countered by the slippery, silvery funk of "Baby Girl" (the Red Hot Chili Peppers wish they were still capable of this). "Porn Star" is the album's only throwaway, but closer "Believe" is one of its highlights. The latter's forceful rocking drive with blazing layered guitars and a throbbing bassline are balanced by in-the-pocket breaks, and balanced by impeccable, three-part vocal harmony to sweeten it just enough. Rockpango is the most satisfying recording that Los Lonely Boys have come up with yet. And it was like he never left, as his very first session produced a great two-sided single, "Tulane" b/w "Have Mercy Judge." The record didn't chart, but it was obvious that Chuck was truly "back home" (as his first album back on Chess was called) and already producing high quality "Chess" recordings once again. The 71 tracks here include his only #1 ("My Ding-A-Ling (live)"), plus 22 previously unreleased recordings, ranging from cool in-studio jams/instrumentals ("Turn On The House Lights," "Rockin'") to 4 additional live recordings from the smoking concert that produced the live side of The London Chuck Berry Sessions; from an intimate, small group session in October of 1972 which produced two throwback "Chuck blues" tracks, "Blues #1" and "Annie Lou," to Chuck's renditions of "Jambalaya" and "Dust My Broom."
