  5. The rap world is at a crossroads. In the face of shrinking budgets, music executives, resting on their laurels, search out the next YouTube sensation with a catchy hook and dance move in order to amass digital single sales. While many artists have tried to break through despite an industry melt down, few have been met with critical praise. And the applause for those that have has not been loud enough to sway the course of the current rap market. Looking to excel where his contemporaries have failed, North Carolina native J. Cole (born Jermaine Cole) brings promise of a new day in hip hop music. Raised by his mother in North Carolina, J. Cole's hometown of Fayetteville would provide much of the sights and experiences that would come to shape his sound. Cole fell into rapping at the age of 12 when his cousin from Louisiana spent the summer in Fayetteville, showing him the basics of rhyming. He was instantly hooked. From there he delved deep into the music of hip hop luminaries including Tupac Shakur, Nas and Outkast, taking from them a love for telling stories with an unbridled rigor. Seizing every opportunity to write, at age 15 J. Cole found himself with composition notebooks full of rhymes but no beats of his own to lay them on. Determined to create original songs, he begged his mother for a beat machine so he could produce music solely for himself. She granted his wish and from there, a young Cole spent all his free time creating sounds and songs that would lay the foundation for what his style has evolved to today. Feeling the need to be heard, J. Cole used college as a tool to chase his dreams. He attended St. John's University on an academic scholarship, choosing the school so that he could be in the heart of the music industry: New York City. After polishing his sound and graduating Magna Cum Laude, J. Cole is dropping his debut mixtape, properly titled "The Come Up" hosted by DJ On Point. A mash up of dusty, soul filled sound beds, raw, energetic drums and an endless range of topics everything from the carefree days of college to the seemingly endless plight of those have-nots scrapping for change. The Come Up puts J. Cole's broad palette of lyrical and production talents on display. "All a nigga wanna do is take his momma from that, but they rather lock us up and make sure we don't come back," he vehemently spits over the cascading keys and triumphant strings of the self produced "Lil' Ghetto Nigga." With such a diverse display, J. Cole is poised to wake up a dormant industry and cement his name in this game. But more than that, with his debut studio album currently in production, he hopes to change the tide of current rap music, swaying it in a more insightful, meaningful and passionate direction." 23. Matthew Thomas White, a.k.a. Teezy , was born October 3, 1986, in Baltimore, Maryland. He grew up in the northwest suburbs of Baltimore and had always been influenced by music. At the age of three Matthew started taking piano lessons and progressed quickly. In 4th grade he started playing the clarinet and added percussion when he was in middle school. When he was 13 he started writing raps and making beats using Fruity Loops. At 16 Matt realized that this could be a future for him and asked his mother if for Christmas she would get him a Mic, soundcard and mixing monitors. His Christmas request was granted. Matthew graduated from Owings Mills High School in 2004 at age 17 and headed to Orlando, Florida to attend school at Full Sail—a highly acclaimed music school. Being so young and away from home, he got into some trouble, let his academics slip and returned home not completing his education. He started losing hope as making it as an artist/producer and began turning to the streets for income and losing site of his goals. In 2006 he returned to music with the group OTM; which, he had done work with before he went to Florida. The group worked on several different projects including “Everything Starts From Now” and “War of the Kings”. In 2007, as a member of OTM, Matthew performed at several venues and started making a name in the Baltimore Music Scene. He also made an appearance on “Real Talk Vol. 3” a high selling Hip Hop DVD. He made his real entrance to the scene in 2008 at E-Watts show in February of that year performing for his first time as a solo artist. Watts encouraged him to be an artist on another level, and began really recording songs. Around that same time Matt put together a Hip-Hop DVD of his own titling it the “I-95 Corridor”; which had artists such as Lil’ Mama and Lil’ Brod. In April 2008 he won the “Rock The Mic” championship and had his first song he produced “My Swag” on the radio. Over the summer of 2008 he released several different mix tapes showcasing himself and other local artists promoting them around the region. NOW In 2009 Matthew started operating his own professional recording studio worth over $30,000. He is currently producing several upcoming artists while working on a solo project that is highly anticipated to be one of the best albums to come out of B-more. He has three mix tapes and 10 new instrumental CDs produced by himself. You definitely want to check out his newest and first solo mix tape “It’s More Than Music”.
