Carmen Mercedes McRae was an American jazz singer, composer, pianist, and actress. Considered one of the most influential jazz vocalists of the 20th century, it was her behind-the-beat phrasing and her ironic interpretations of song lyrics that made her memorable. McRae drew inspiration from Billie Holiday, but established her own distinctive voice. She went on to record over 60 albums, enjoying a rich musical career, performing and recording in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

After reuniting with Curb Records late in their career, Howard and David Bellamy re-emerge with new material following a double greatest-hits collection. Redneck Girls Forever is typical of the Bellamy style, featuring a smattering of social commentary about how the world has left the over-40 crowd in the dust intermingled with steamy love songs. Most of the cuts are written by David Bellamy. The Bellamy Brothers can't seem to let go of the past, constantly bewailing the state of the modern world and the fact that the two siblings are just plain getting older. Most of the songs are curved around a seemingly catchy hook, such as "What I Used to Do All Night," a 60-something's lament on losing "intimate stamina." Sometimes the hook is effective, but other times ("The Andy Griffith Show") the nostalgia is stifling. A shining moment comes when the Bellamys recount the story of a marital infidelity and deliver the line, "After I go to hell can I come on home to you?" When you've recorded as many hits and albums as the Bellamys have, the pressure to continue the streak isn't as great; unfortunately, the trade-off can result in mediocrity.

Aaron Neville - The Tattooed Heart (1995)

Aaron Neville is an unlikely example of a '60s soul hero who managed to reinvent himself as a '90s pop star without compromising his integrity. Drawing on pop as well as the type of New Orleans soul that put him on the map, Neville proved that he could once again be quite marketable. Like Warm Your Heart, The Tattooed Heart isn't on a par with Neville's early efforts, but nonetheless has a lot going for it. Though not breathtaking, material ranging from the soul ballad "Show Some Emotion" to the earthy rock number "Down Into Muddy Water" and the reggae-influenced hit "Can't Stop My Heart from Loving You (The Rain Song)" is honest and enjoyable. Another high point of this CD is an inspired remake of Bill Withers' "Use Me." Because an urban contemporary approach didn't interest him, the "new" Neville received little support from Black radio -- but on pop stations, he'd become a high priority.

...I can only comment on the artist and the song selection. For those two aspects of this compilation, I give 5 stars without hesitation. This guy was really unbelievable. Every song is an instant winner, which is pretty incredible when there are fully 34 songs. Marvin Gaye is almost good enough to make me renounce rock and roll; he certainly played a big part in showing me that there is more out there than just rock and roll. I don't know, if you feel the need to burn your CDs, then go for another compilation--although there really aren't any others as comprehensive as this one. But please, however you decide to do it, GET SOMETHING BY MARVIN GAYE. You don't know music until you do.

Marie Laforet is a French singer and actress, (born Maitena Marie Brigitte Doumenach, on October 5, 1939, in Soulac-sur-Mer, Gironde). In 1978 she moved to Geneva, Switzerland and took out Swiss nationality. Her career began accidentally in 1959 when she replaced her sister at the last minute in a French radio talent contest Naissance d'une etoile (birth of a star) and won. Director Louis Malle then cast the young starlet in the film he was shooting at the time, Liberte, a project he finally abandoned, making Laforet's first appearance on screen opposite actor Alain Delon in Rene Clement's 1960 drama Plein Soleil. Laforet has been fond of folk music ever since she began recording in the early 1960s. She helped popularize the Bob Dylan song "Blowin' in the Wind" in France with her 1963 interpretation. On the B-side of the same EP she sings the classic American folk ballad "House of the Rising Sun". Other folk recordings include: "Viens sur la montagne", a 1964 French adaptation of the African-American spiritual "Go Tell It on the Mountain"...Wikipedia
