You know I've been asking myself this question for the past 20 years of DJ'ing (started when I was 12) and the list grows longer and longer as new "ways" to dj are brought to the table. Lets take a trip for a second down memory lane. Remember when you HAD to carry crates of records to a club. Remember when you HAD to have your own set of tables (and they HAD to be Technics 1200-anything less would be uncivilized). Remember when you HAD to charge $400 + (bare minimal) to afford to buy records. Remember when you HAD to have mic game cuz there wasnt a such thing as a "host". Now you can buy a laptop, serato, and call yourself a DJ. When Im talkin to new promoters, they ask me if I have a mixtape. I DONT DO MIXTAPES....simple as that.. Why?? 1st cuz everybody and they momma got a mixtape. DJ Dumbass jus released a mixtape yesterday. LOL But seriously, a mixtape jus says that i can put some music on a cd, throw some drops in and duplicate a CD. But it doesnt say if I can rock a party. My website has LIVE mixes on them not a bunch of mixtape covers. No diss to the mixtape DJ but thats not my swagga as a DJ. The point to all of this is that a new generation of DJs dont know about nor do they have to worry about the MUST HAVES of yesterday so they do whatever they can to make money at it, even if it compromises the art of DJ'ing.
