There are millions of DJ's who have strived for years to make an impact in the hip hop and music community. Those who have quit full time jobs to pursue the perks and the lifestyle that comes from being a popular DJ. DJ's who spend 20 hours a day researching music, booking parties and politicking only to be under bid by up-coming DJ's who are so hungry that they are willing to work for nothing, or little pay. That move is so WRONG!!...Im so tired of dealing with promoters,event planners and clubs who after they hear your sales pitch tell you that they have another DJ who is willing to work for NO MONEY. As an established DJ i spent years working with another well established DJ who taught me the ropes but at the same time always made sure the people who cut the check knew that i was a part of the cash equation at the end of the night. Now being on my own, instead of DJ's wanting to learn the business, they would rather under bid you and cut you out and make it hard for "US" to ask for the money that we are worth. How upsetting is it to know that a promoter of a party made more than $20,000 at the end of the nite and you the ROOKIE DJ only got $75 because you were willing to work for nothing. STOP THE INSANITY. IF you don't know how to deal with promoters take the time to find a DJ who does and allow them to open some doors for you before you UNDERBID THE BUSINESS... Oh one more thing. As an upcoming DJ if you are one of the ones who constantly asks me for work then when i offer it to you you tell me that your busy, make up an excuse, or tell me you need more money when you werent working in the 1st place, STOP FUCKING CALLING ME AND WASTING MY CELL PHONE MINUTES Any comments on these matters would be appreciated. In my opinion you can learn the craft of dj'ing all day and nite, but you can't really call yourself a "DJ" until you have some experience rocking parties. I'm not talking about a couple, I'm talking years of doing parties. Also, know your music and adapt to the crowd. Reply by DJ SoulStar

To be considered a dj you must at least... 1. have a love for the art (dj's are artists too) 2. know how to mix & blend not just a microphone dj that talks over and between all the songs 3. do one of the following, radio, mixtapes, clubs, tours, studio, mixshows, parties, scratching, remixes, break new artists/music 4. know how to mix with mp3s/cds/records, computer programs, turntables is a must! 5. know the who, what, when & why about what music to play (and not to play) Reply by Dj Smoke

In a day of mp3's, cue buttons, iTunes, DJ Software, and free access to music, what exactly is it that qualifies someone to call themselves a DJ? Is it Scratching, Mixing, Breaking New Music, making compilation CDs, or what? As an organization, we are going to have to set some guidelines and standards as to who we can accept as a member of our profession.
