Mila J fancied her musical styling in the same light as her singing and rapping idols TLC and Missy Elliott. Add to her singing and rapping combo her passion for dancing and ability to write song lyrics, and it seemed apparent that this Los Angeles native aimed to achieve the same level of acclaim and prosperity as those same pop icons of hers. Born of black, Japanese, and Native American descent, Mila J (real name Jamila Chilumbo) started rapping, according to the singer, at the age of four, inspired by a deep admiration for the Fat Boys and the '80s cult hip-hop movie Krush Groove. Because her father was a studio musician, the music bug was in the rest of her family as well, namely her sisters Jhené and Miyoko. Her break into the music industry occurred at the age of nine when she met the owner and CEO of The Ultimate Group, Chris Stokes, at a video shoot for his group Immature; in addition, she also caught Stokes' attention with her appearance in Prince's "Diamond and Pearls" video in 1991. Mila J went on to dance professionally for Stokes and Immature between the ages of 12 and 15. Along with Miyoko, she was a member of the Stokes-driven Gyrl, who released singles for Silas/MCA. Several years later, she was part of the shorter-lived Dame Four, yet another Stokes venture. She then went solo. Her petite vocals could be heard on the 2006 singles "Complete" and the charting "Good Lookin' Out," which built up anticipation for her debut album, Split Personality, which was scheduled for release on Universal Motown but was ultimately shelved. After going by the name Japollonia, she reappeared on Motown as Mila J with the 2014 single "Smoke, Drink, Break-Up." ~ Cyril Cordor

With hair that looks like red-hot cheese curls and the wild Atlanta ATLien style to match, Miles McCollum, known as Lil Yachty, bounces between the party attitude of Migos and the druggy weirdness of Future with the greatest of ease. Part of this is due to the use of two personas, the wild Lil Yachty and the stern but strange MC Lil Boat. He began to break in 2015 when Drake's OVO Sound Radio show aired his bizarre, sing-songy number "Minnesota." In early 2016, his other persona became the name of Lil Boat, his debut for the Capitol- and Motown-affiliated independent Quality Control. The mixtape featured "Minnesota" along with "One Night," a woozy party cut that reached number 30 on Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart and cracked the Hot 100. An appearance at Kanye West's Yeezy Season 3 fashion show followed soon after, along with an appearance on Chance the Rapper's Top Ten mixtape Coloring Book. A second Quality Control mixtape, Summer Songs 2, arrived that August and debuted on the R&B/Hip-Hop chart at number 44. ~ David Jeffries & Andy Kellman

An Atlanta MC who hit before he released his first mixtape, Dae Dae knew he had a hit the moment he wrote "Wat U Mean (Aye, Aye, Aye)." The rapper had spent time in the studio, but never allowed his music to be heard by the public until 2015. He was working construction when he decided "Wat U Mean (Aye, Aye, Aye)" would be his debut track, and when it dropped in late 2015, it became a regional hit. In 2016, after Young Dro jumped on the remix, it became a national summer hit. Dae Dae signed with 300 Entertainment that same year and released his 4 Reasons mixtape. ~ David Jeffries

Aaron Dontez Yates (born November 8, 1971), better known by his stage name Tech N9ne (pronounced Tech Nine), is an American rapper. In 1999, Yates and Travis O'Guin founded the record label Strange Music. He has sold over two million albums and has had his music featured in film, television, and video games. In 2009, he won the Left Field Woodie award at the mtvU Woodie Awards.
His stage name originated from the TEC-9 semi-automatic handgun, a name given to him by rapper Black Walt due to his fast-rhyming Chopper style. Yates later applied a deeper meaning to the name, claiming that it stands for the complete technique of rhyme, with "tech" meaning technique and "nine" representing the number of completion.
