Jackie McLean with The Great Jazz Trio - New Wine in Old Bottles (1978) EAC rip | FLAC + .cue, log-file | Scans | Rar 3% rec. | 260 Mb Genre: Jazz, Cool, Hard Bop, Post-Bop | Label: Test of Time Records It was an inspired idea to match alto saxophonist Jackie McLean with the Great Jazz Trio, a regularly working unit on record and in concert led by the outstanding pianist Hank Jones, joined by two first call players, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Tony Williams. Although the word "again" is added to McLean's two originals, the barnburner "Appointment in Ghana" and "Little Melonae," they aren't very different from earlier recordings in concept. McLean also shines in ballad settings of "It Never Entered My Mind" and "'Round Midnight." Jones' advanced playing may be a eye-opener for some fans who do not realize how advanced and wide ranging a pianist he is. The Great Jazz Trio - Collaboration (2004) EAC rip | FLAC + .cue, log-file | Scans | Rar 3% rec. | 320 Mb Genre: Post-Bop, Cool | Label: Village Records Collaboration is the third CD to be issued from a pair of 2002 sessions by the Great Jazz Trio, featuring Elvin Jones and Richard Davis with leader Hank Jones. The pianist previously worked alongside Davis on numerous sessions led by other musicians, including Elvin's Dear John C., though the Jones brothers worked together only sporadically during their long careers. Although eight of the songs appeared on Someday My Prince Will Come (issued by Eighty-Eights/Columbia) and the earlier 441 CD Autumn Leaves, these are valid alternate takes and not repeats or castoffs. Elvin Jones, who died in 2004 from heart problems, is still in top form on these sessions, especially on the thunderous opener, "Rhythm-a-Ning," though he focuses quite a bit on his underrated brushwork for the remainder of the disc. Davis shines in the spacious arrangement of "Summertime" and the jaunty treatment of "Satin Doll." The leader's brisk approach to "The Shadow of Your Smile" proves to be very refreshing, while his intricate arrangement of "Moose the Mooche" is especially subtle. One is that the Rolling Stones are old. Another is that they're still able to play with a tightness and vigor that stands up to the music being made by most current 20-something outfits. That energy crackles through the 16 tracks on the SHINE A LIGHT soundtrack, the film's sonic counterpart, which captures the Stones at New York City's Beacon Theater in 2006 in surprisingly stripped-down, feral form. There's nothing flashy or pretentious about the Stones' performance, which helps highlight their unmistakably natural, time-tested ease playing with each other. Even dusty classics like "Jumpin' Jack Flash" and "Brown Sugar" come off with flair, and lesser-played gems like "Faraway Eyes" and "You Got the Silver" are a welcome treat. The guests-the White Stripes' Jack White on "Loving Cup," Buddy Guy on the Muddy Waters' classic "Champagne and Reefer," and Christina Aguilera on a fiery version of "Live With Me"-enliven the band, and provide some of the album's best moments. Given the amount of live Stones' material available, and the band's already towering legend, the necessity of such a set may be debatable, but it's hard not to hear this for what it is: a good rock show from a band that knows its stuff. Though the African percussive element is still present, it now takes a back seat to subtle layered electronics and influences from India and the Middle East, and the huge, passionate Pharoah sound of old is mostly toned-down and recessed, sometimes squeezed into a double-reeded instrument. The 14-minute "My Jewels of Love" captures the ethereal Sanders particularly well, his cool soprano rising over tablas, harmonium and electric piano as Laswell's production imperceptibly changes the scenery over time. On "The Ancient Song," there are some ghostly fascimiles of the exciting Pharoah of not very long ago, and Sanders attains some gentle spiritual fervor over the subtly layered electronics of "Kazuko." Then there is the anomaly of "Midnight In Berkeley Square," which is "A Nightingale Sang In Berkeley Square" done pretty straight, with Pharoah playing sweet and almost sentimental tenor, until the dream world of pop standards slowly dissolves at the close. Genre: jazz, vocal jazz, pop Mario Pecoraro, the piano player and singer was born in Bludenz in 1978. He is strongly characterized by his Italian roots. At the age of 15, Mario enrols as the youngest full student at the University of Music and Representational Art, to study classical drums. His increasing love for jazz and Latin American music brings him to his secret love, the piano. After radically switching to the program of Jazz and Pop Piano, he is selected among numerous applicants for a one-year scholarship at the University of Miami, School of Music. After a very successful year of studies there, the School of Music offers him a full scholarship. Impressions and experiences in the United States are formative for Mario Pecoraro and deeply change his musical creativity. Back in Austria, he graduates with distinction, and embarks on a career as piano player for The Rounder Girls from late 2003. During this time he also becomes aware of his own path as a solo artist and sets about the purposive preoccupation with his own songs. In the summer of 2008, Mario Pecoraro begins an intense cooperation with the American lyricist Art Reade, who uses a very special talent for vivid language, rich with images based on spiritual roots. This becomes a major inspiration for the singer/piano player, and a unique work of art is born: his new album: ?In the World of Art.?. In his own words: "It all started out when Art came up with a poem for one of his seminars that I was attending. The group delights in performing many of Fedchock's own dynamic compositions and arrangements as well as more well-known standards, creating a sound that not only honors, but expands the tradition of the American big band. The band's four CDs for the Reservoir Music label, "New York Big Band", "On The Edge", "No Nonsense", and "Up & Running", have all received high praise from critics and extraordinary success on national jazz radio charts. So it is not surprising that when Thomas Arne came to write a serious opera for Covent Garden in 1762 he should set a libretto by Metastasio, albeit one translated into English. Metastasio?s Artaserse was originally written in 1729 and had been set by over ninety composers including Vinci, Gluck and J.C. Bach. Arne used his own translation, something which caused quite a bit of comment at the time but his text seems quite serviceable, albeit with one or two Gilbertian moments. Artaxerxes was popular and remained in the Covent Garden repertory until the late 1830s but it then fell out of use (with one notable exception) until Ian Page and the Classical Opera Company revived it last year. The notable exception involved Joan Sutherland who recorded The soldier, tir?d of war?s alarms on her Art of the Prima donna set. Anyone who heard that stunning account of the aria must have been puzzled about the opera?s absence from disc. The problem was that in 1808, all the manuscript materials were destroyed in a fire at the Theatre Royal. Arne had published the arias, duets and ensembles (except for the finale), but there was no score of the complete opera. The later 19th century performances were in a version by Henry Bishop. Luckily the complete libretto survived, so for the 2009 revival, Page re-composed the recitatives and commissioned Duncan Druce to create a new finale, It is this that has been recorded in the wake of the live performances at Covent Garden. Artaserse is, frankly, not one of Metastasio?s best libretti. It requires a substantial suspension of disbelief when it comes to the character of the hero, Arbaces. But it was Arbaces? very nobility which probably was the cause of the opera?s popularity. Eighteenth century audiences liked seeing princes being put through the wringer and displaying a profound nobility of characters in the most trying of unlikely circumstances. Within these limits the result is a remarkably fluent and dramatic opera. Arne keeps the pace going so that the entire opera, all three acts of it, lasts a bit over two hours even though it includes some 29 arias, duets and ensembles. Arne?s set-pieces are generally short, but they often require virtuoso skills. They never overstay their welcome. As this recording came after a series of performances, the cast are all firmly in charge of the drama and the record make rather gripping - and sometimes - thrilling listening. The cast?s diction is uniformly excellent so that, though a complete libretto is provided, you never need to refer to it in order to follow the complexities of the plot. Duncan Druce?s finale concludes things in fine style. The orchestra provides strong support and despatches Arne?s lively overture with élan. Arne writes for quite a big band, with horns, trumpets and timpani. Anyone with an interest in 18th century opera ought to try the disc. Spanish composer and organist. He was a member of the choir of Pamplona Cathedral from 1734 to 1739. In 1748 he was made first organist of the Spanish royal chapel, an appointment that placed him in the orbit of Domenico Scarlatti for a period of at least eight years. It is possible that he was in Madrid before then. Albero?s extant music survives in two undated manuscripts: Sonatas para clavicordio (I-Vnm It. IV 197b/9768) and Obras, para clavicordio, o piano forte (E-Mc 4/1727(2)). The first of these was probably taken to Italy by the castrato Farinelli when he left Spain in 1759. The Madrid source is possibly the earliest Spanish manuscript to indicate the pianoforte in its title. It is apparent that Scarlatti and his sonatas influenced Albero?s style, and that José El

Although the word "again" is added to McLean's two originals, the barnburner "Appointment in Ghana" and "Little Melonae," they aren't very different from earlier recordings in concept. McLean also shines in ballad settings of "It Never Entered My Mind" and "'Round Midnight." Jones' advanced playing may be a eye-opener for some fans who do not realize how advanced and wide ranging a pianist he is.
