I feel everything you guys are saying and have experienced the majority of it myself....We have to take this djing thing back to the roots. What it boils down to is how much are you willing to invest in yourself and how much work are you willing to do? Back in the day shit didn't go down without djs and it still rings true today. Clubs and promoters are there as a temporary avenue; that shit should not be your goal....What I come to realize is club money and djing for other people doesn't come remotely close to the money that you make if you put the event together yourself; you take all the risk but you reap all of the benefits. Invest in sound equipment; network with other djs and if they can get you where you want to be; bring them on board. That way you cut out the middle man; honestly what does a promoter do that you can't do for yourself........pass out fliers? Really. I stop fucking with promoters because they don't understand all the work that we do on a day to day basis. They just see you as somebody coming to play music. We all know being a dj is WORK; not to mention the money you have invested in equipment and your time. I love djing; and respect all djs; but we need to really step our game up......The point I'm making is Fuck a promoter; build a good team; and do your own shit. That way you don't have to worry about ever being under cut. If you have to do something for a promoter make sure you keep it on your mind that it is temporary.... Respect to Zulu for starting this thread.
