Austin, TX is still feeling the shockwaves of the alleged drunk driving tragedy that cost two festival goers their lives and left almost two dozen others injured.

The hit-and-run accident took place outside of a Tyler, the Creator show at 12:30 a.m. on Thursday (March 13), as patrons waiting to enter the The House of Vans were struck. As a result, the venue’s scheduled day party for Stereogum, which, like VIBE, is owned by SpinMedia, has been cancelled.

Vans has released the following statement in response to the tragic events:

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of last night’s senseless tragedy. We are working together with SXSW and city officials on next steps. We will be canceling all events scheduled for this afternoon. Tonight’s events are still pending, we will communicate information as it becomes available.

SpinMedia has also responded with a statement:

Due to the terrible tragedy in Austin last night, the daytime events scheduled at The Mohawk have been cancelled. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families.

As previously reported, Austin Police Chief Art Acevedo said that the incident started as a DWI stop at a gas station on the I-35 access road where the suspected driver drove at a "high-rate speed," killing one adult male and one adult female. Five of the 23 injured who were rushed to the hospital are in critical condition.

The man attempted to flee his vehicle before cops took him into custody. The driver will be charged two counts of capital murder and 23 counts of aggravated assault with a vehicle.

The House of Vans was scheduled to play host to showcases by SPIN, Stereogum and VIBE at SXSW this year. There is no word yet on whether VIBE’s (March 15) showcase will also be cancelled.

Stay tuned for more information on the events scheduled to take place at the Austin House of Vans. —John Kennedy
