Former NBA Commissioner David Stern died on Wednesday after he suffered a brain hemorrhage 3 weeks ago. Stern was 77 years old.

Stern became the Commissioner of the NBA in 1984 and retired in 2014 leaving the reigns to Adam Silver. “Every member of the NBA family is the beneficiary of David’s vision, generosity and inspiration.  Our deepest condolences go out to David’s wife, Dianne, their sons, Andrew and Eric, and their extended family, and we share our grief with everyone whose life was touched by him,” Silver said in a statement.

According to Silver, Stern is responsible for “groundbreaking” media and marketing relationships that the NBA currently holds and he also calls Stern “one of the most influential business leaders of his generation.”

Stern was the longest-serving NBA commissioner in his 30 years with the league.
