Kimari Brand, a self-proclaimed "twerk scholar," is exploring the dance in a new Irma L. Garcia-directed short documentary called Twerk it Girl. Brand, who identifies as a feminist who twerks for empowerment, explores the dance's roots in places like the Afro-Caribbean and how it doesn't carry the sexualized stigma that it has in America.
